Yep, you’re right—you must have an iPhone 4, fourth-generation iPod Touch, or iPad to use Find My iPhone with a free Apple ID account; apologies for any confusion. That said, check out out this Lifehacker tip for using Find My iPhone for free on an older iDevice:
