Yep, I hear ya—depends on the situation. In my own particular case, I’ve lost one smartphone over the past 9 years … but for me, the replacement phone wouldn’t have been worth the $540 in premiums over all that time (assuming $5 a month for 108 months, and not counting the deductible for replacing the phone).

I definitely see the logic in the math, but my own personal experience has been different. I have used insurance to replace 2 smartphones. In the latest case (lost Nexus S), I’ve paid ~$128 total for the monthly premium, plus $130 for the deductible. Still much cheaper than buying a replacement. Over the months and months of phone ownership, across multiple plans, with phones I did not lose, the math does not work out in my favor. But I’m sad to say my budgeting is still necessarily more of a month-to-month affair than an amortized accounting of 5-years of payments.
