An airbag for your cell phone?

A shock-proof case for your smartphone is one thing, but how about sensors that can tell if you just dropped your $500 handset—plus a series of tiny airbags to cushion the fall?

It’s a sounds-crazy-but-just-might-work kind of idea, and it comes from the mind of no less than Amazon boss Jeff Bezos, GeekWire reports.

Bezos’ just-discovered patent application also suggests itty-bitty jets that could twirl a tumbling phone around so it can land on its airbag-protected side, kind of like a cat that lands on its feet by twisting in mid-air. Neat.
