Rick wrote (in response to “How to turn off your iPhone’s unread email badge”): Unfortunately, there still doesn’t seem to be a way to turn off the actual notification [for new email messages] itself. Even if you switch everything to off, the phone still makes a sound and vibrates when a new mail comes in.
Hi Rick! Actually, you can turn off the beeps and vibrations for new emails on your iPhone—it’s just that the actual controls for doing so aren’t sitting in the iPhone’s Notifications settings, where you’d think they’d be.
Here’s where to look instead.
- Tap Settings, Sounds, then scroll down and tap New Mail.
- Don’t want to hear a beep or feel a vibration each time a new email arrives? If so, tap None.
- While you’re here, you can also turn off the sound and vibration alerts for several other events, including sent mail (although I personally like the “swoosh” sound after hitting the “Send” button), an incoming text message, and calendar or reminder alerts. You can also switch off key “clicks” and the “lock” sound when you put your iPhone to sleep or wake it up.
That’s it! And if you later decide that you miss the sound of new mail, you can always return to the Sound settings and simply pick an alert tone or a ringtone.
I did this and still get the standard beep when a new email arrives. Very annoying. The only thing I figured out was to set the fetch new data push to manual. Now I need to open my mail before it checks to see if I have anything new. I don’t like this though because I’m forgetful.
Hi Joey! Thanks for the comment—looks like this tip is out of date. To turn off the notification sound for email, you need to tap Settings, Notifications, Mail, then go into each of your various email accounts and change “New Mail Sound” to “None.” Let me know if that doesn’t work for you…cheers!
Thanks Ben…would not have known that!
Don’t forget to turn off New Mail Sound for the VIP account that is treat like a separate mail account for sound.
I am finding that since I have my work email and secondary personal Yahoo account hooked up, it turns off the work email but not the other. Any suggestions? The sound is set to NONE.
I have done everything you suggested and this alert for new email is driving me crazy!
Well I finally got rid of that annoying ding, it was an alert from email, I went to notifications and turned all off under mail alert style to none but you have to leave the notification center tab to on.
Thanks for the update! Something tells me this is a broken feature, because try as I might, I can’t turn the “new email” sound back on with my iPhone 5, even after repeatedly tweaking the Sound and Notification settings. Stranger still, I can’t turn the new mail sound off on my old iPhone 3GS. Way more confusing than it should be. Will keep investigating…
HELP…….I have mine set to NONE but still get the ding sound?????????
