Still tapping out phone numbers on the dial pad of your Android phone? I like your style—and just to prove it, here’s a time-saving tip you’ll probably appreciate.
Hidden deep in the dialer settings for your Android device is a feature that’ll suggest contact names at the same time as you’re tapping in phone numbers.
Tap in “646,” for example, and you’ll start seeing the names of contacts in the 646 area code; tap a few more numbers, and the pile of suggestions will gradually start to shrink.
See the name of the person you want to call? Just tap it.
Just go to the Settings screen for the Android dialer to find the “Dial pad autocomplete” feature.

Android’s “dial pad autocomplete” feature made its debut with version 4.3 (“Jelly Bean”) of the Android OS—and by default, it’s turned off.
Here’s how to turn it on (and keep in mind, as usual, that these steps may vary depending on the make and model of your Android phone)…
- Launch the Android phone dialer (just tap home-screen app icon in the shape of a phone handset).
- In the bottom-right corner of the screen, tap the three-dot menu button and select Settings.
- Look down the list of settings until you see the one marked “Dial pad autocomplete,” then go ahead and tap its checkbox.
Now, go back to the dialer and starting tapping out a phone number—and when you do, you’ll should instantly see suggested contacts pop up on the screen.
